WHY THIS MATTERS

You may already owe sales tax and not know it

Economic nexus is based on your sales volume into a state, not whether you have a warehouse or office there. Most Canadian ecommerce sellers cross these thresholds without realising it, especially on platforms like Shopify and Amazon where US orders add up fast.

Every state sets its own economic nexus threshold

There is no single US sales tax rule. Most states set their threshold at $100,000, but the rules vary. If you are selling into multiple states, it is easy to cross a threshold without knowing and owe back taxes. The free calculator above checks every state at once.

This is not something a general accountant does for you

Most Canadian accountants do not check US sales tax obligations. If you are selling into the US from Canada, you need someone who knows the economic nexus by state, when and where to register. That is exactly what our team does for Canadian ecommerce sellers.

HOW THIS WORKS

Knowing where you owe is the first step. Filing correctly is the next one.

Most Canadian ecommerce sellers either do not know they have passed a threshold or find out too late. We help Shopify and Amazon sellers figure out where they are, handle the registration, and make sure nothing surprises them as US sales grow.

Common questions about US economic nexus for ecommerce sellers

Economic nexus means a US state can make you collect sales tax when your sales into that state pass a certain threshold, even if you have no physical presence there. It applies to any seller, including Canadian ecommerce businesses selling into the US through Shopify, Amazon, or any other platform.

Most states set their economic nexus threshold at $100,000 in annual sales, but some are lower and a few also count the number of orders. These economic nexus standards are set at the state level and can change. The free calculator above does this for every state at once.

Enter your annual US sales by state into the free nexus calculator above. If your sales in any state exceed that state’s economic nexus threshold, you likely need to register for sales tax there.

California’s economic nexus threshold is $500K in annual sales, higher than most states. But other states where you sell may have lower thresholds.

Texas has an economic nexus threshold of $500,000 in annual sales. Once you cross it, you are required to register and collect Texas sales tax.

New York’s economic nexus threshold is $$500K in sales and 100 transactions during the Preceding 4 Sales Tax Quarters. Both conditions must be met. If you are a Canadian seller with high-volume, lower-ticket orders into New York, the transaction count is what to watch.

Florida’s economic nexus threshold is $100,000 in annual sales. This is the standard across most states and one that Canadian ecommerce sellers cross more often than they expect.

The state can assess back taxes, penalties, and interest from the date you should have registered. The longer you wait, the more you owe. This is one of the most common compliance gaps we see with Canadian sellers expanding into the US.

Economic nexus for income tax works differently than for sales tax, the rules, thresholds, and obligations are separate. If you are selling to US customers from Canada, sales tax is the issue to check first. This free calculator covers sales tax economic nexus only.

No. Economic nexus is a sales tax obligation. It applies whether or not you have a US entity. You can register for state sales tax as a foreign business. A US LLC is a separate decision with its own costs and filing requirements. We have a separate calculator for that.
